Chemical Safety Information
The information on this website provides up-to-date supporting information for the Hazardous Materials Management
Chapter of the ES&H Manual (Chapter 40).  Each of the items below reference the applicable section of the Hazardous
Materials Management Chapter that refers to it.

NOTE: THIS IS A DRAFT WEBSITE THAT WILL BE FINALIZED IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE COMPLETION OF THE
HAZARDOUS MATERIALS MANAGEMENT CHAPTER.  WHEN COMPLETED IT'S CONTENT WILL BE INTEGRATED
WITH THE OFFICIAL SLAC ES&H WEBSITE
Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) Information (5.1.3)

Under the SLAC CHP, a written chemical hygiene plan is
required by all chemical laboratories in which the
following conditions are met:
  • Chemical manipulations are carried out on a
    laboratory scale
  • Multiple chemical procedures or chemicals are
    used
  • Chemical procedures are not part of a production
process and do not simulate a production process
  • Safety equipment and PPE are available and in
    use

The following laboratories are covered under the scope
of the "Occupational Exposures to Hazardous Chemicals
in Laboratories" standard (Title 29 Code of Federal
Regulations 1910.1450). As such, they are covered by
SLAC's Chemical Hygiene Program (SLAC CHP).

  • SSRL Biotech User Labs, Building 120, Rooms
    257 and 258
  • SSRL Biotech Staff Labs, Building 131, Rooms
    113 and 209

Chemical-Specific Safe Handling Guides
(5.1.3 and 5.1.4.1)

Information about chemical safety is provided in the
MSDS for each chemical.  The complete SLAC MSDS
database is located at
http://www.tcmis.com/tcmIS/doe/MSDS?limit=yes&noncat
alog=yes.

For certain chemical operations, SLAC has develop
Chemical-Specific Safe Handling Guides.  The purpose
of these guides is to provide a synopsis of key safety
information on the material in question.  These Guide
can be printed double-sided and easily posted in the
area of the chemical use to serve as a reference tool
for the chemical user.  This guide does not replace the
need for access to a MSDS, nor for labels on containers
of the materials.
